The Emmaus Community is a non-denominational Christian community that is a unique fusion of post-modern worship and a celebration of the historic African American worship traditions. We began in the spring of 2005 when seven friends gathered around a dinner table and the seed of what would become was planted. This idea sprouted into a larger group of people who committed to pray for three months, after which time, we were all convinced that we should proceed in the launching of a new community of faith -- a place that reached out to those who are “distant, disinterested and disenfranchised.” We dreamed of a place where you could “belong before you believed.” We longed to create an experience where we were inspired when we left the fellowship. We hoped for a safe place to seek after God. So we hosted bi-weekly Bible Studies during the fall and winter of 2005 in the auditorium of nearby college and added monthly Sunday “Preview” gatherings at a local movie theatre. After the surprising opportunity to purchase a building in early 2006, we began meeting regularly on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006. We stand with thanksgiving in the shade of a youthful tree, fully aware of its continued growth and potential, under God's watchful eye.
The Emmaus Community sprung from a dinner conversation where a seed was planted and transformed into a prayer group. As the soil was prepared and watered daily, it grew into the sapling of a launch team, and later the firm branches supported Thursday evening gatherings. We now stand in the shade of a youthful tree, fully aware of its continued growth and potential, under God's watchful eye.
Emmaus is a family committed to heading north, stopping only to honor the Sabbath. We believe each person on this earth is here for a reason, as indicated by our benediction:
You are a light on a hill.
Shine brightly in your homes,
and even when you don't think anyone is watching.
Even when you don't think you are worthy...
